STORIES OF BURMA - Acheik Collection
New York Fashion Week
For my NYFW SS23 collection, I am profoundly inspired by Burma (Myanmar), as such I decided to use the Burma traditional textile design called “Acheik”.
Acheik is a unique Burmese traditional textile pattern seen on longyi (skirt) fabric, worn by both women & men during ceremonial events.
Most commonly you will see Acheik worn during weddings, traditional ceremonies, & national gatherings. Traditional Acheik designs feature a mix of rolling waves, floral themed vine embellishments, & Burmese ornamental baroque art.
More modern designs of Acheik are inspired by & feature the forms of clouds, flowers, & zigzag lightening patterns.
I am using these very traditional fabrics designs, but to create very contemporary & unique fashion looks. Some of my looks are inspired by the fabrics themselves, while others I am remixing design elements used in traditional garments to create more modern looks.
For example, in this look, you will see a dress train commonly used on Burmese longyi (Htamein), wedding dresses, a train that I have never seen in the western fashion world. However, I am mixing this traditional Burmese dress train with a unique classy front & a sexy open strappy back.
